The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Republic of Rwanda held the first Technical Meeting to prepare for the Innovating Education in Africa Expo 2020 from 13-14 February 2020 in Kigali, Rwanda. The meeting s expected to provide the platform for showcasing 40 Education Innovations from across the continent, some of which will be piloted in African Union Member States.

A Technical session was held with officials from the Ministry of Education of Rwanda and other national education bodies on 13 February 2019, attended by Dr. Yohannes Woldetensae, Senior Education Expert–HRST, AUC; Mr. Caseley Olabode, Education Policy Officer–HRST, AUC; Mr. Mich-Seth Owusu, Liaison Officer–HRST; Mrs. Angelique Tusime, Deputy Director General of Rwanda Education Board (REB);  Mrs. Winnie Muleebwaa, Acting Director General of Corporate Services of Ministry of Education; Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, Deputy Vice Chancellor in Charge of Academic Affairs of Rwanda Polytechnic; Mr. Leon Mwumvaneza, Acting Chief Information Officer of the Ministry of Education, and Mr. Gabriel Byuma, Sales Manager for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions and Events (MICE) of the Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB).

The Minister of Education, H.E. Dr. Eugène Mutimura expressed appreciation to the AUC for the opportunity to host the meeting.

Key issues discussed included the objectives, outcomes and expectations for the event. A key expectation highlighted for this year was increased participation of Reginal Economic Communities (RECs).

The theme for the event was agreed as “Leveraging opportunities to reach the unreached with Quality Education and Training”.

It was agreed by Rwanda and AUC that August will be a suitable date for the meeting, however the actual dates will be communicated by 28 February 2020, when the Rwanda Convention Bureau verifies availability of dates. In all, about 800 participants are expected to attend the event.

The Call for Innovations is expected to be published in March 2020.
